Ribal Al-Assad discusses the prospects of democratic development in Syria with the UK's Shadow Minister for the Middle East

Wednesday, 1 December 2010

Ribal Al-Assad, Director of the ODFS, yesterday had a meeting with the UK's Shadow Minister for the Middle East, Labour MP, Stephen Twigg, in the House of Commons. They had a comprehensive discussion about promoting democratic development in Syria and the wider issues concerning the Middle East.

Commenting on the meeting, Ribal said "I was delighted and honoured to meet Stephen Twigg. We had an excellent discussion about the role the UK can play in helping to promote democratic development in Syria and ending the entrenched state corruption there. We also talked about the need to continue to hold the Syrian regime to account to ensure that it meets its international obligations and ends its practice of arbitrary arrests and detentions, and releases all those who have been imprisoned because they were exercising their right to peaceful freedom of expression and association. I look forward to working with him."
